Franklin County Family Album

Family memories are full of places and faces. Most of us have a drawer or wall full of remembered faces, but pictures of “all the old familiar places” are more scarce. That’s a gap we hope to fill with A Franklin County Family Album. It captures many of the places that we remember from home town days that are now long gone.
The project began with our growing appreciation of the image collection at the Franklin House of History in Malone. As we sorted through thousands of great old photographs, we knew they should be shared. We proposed this volume to the trustees of the Franklin County Historical and Museum Society, using primarily the museum’s photos but supplemented by loans from interested individuals to round out the collection.
The board was enthusiastic and generous in its approval and in its willingness to fund the initial purchase of volumes. We are grateful to the Society for its support, and for its patience with the pace of preparation and publication.
We found that the 19 towns of the county were unevenly represented in the museum’s collection of photographs. Malone, as the county seat and location of the Society’s headquarters, was richly pictured, while we had very few images from other towns. When we asked the historians and residents of those towns to help, they responded generously. Thus, the Family Album’s pictures are drawn from the museum’s own collection unless otherwise noted by “Courtesy of” statements alongside photographs that we borrowed. We extend our warmest thanks to these lenders of precious pictorial records.
We would also like to thank the following individuals, who have been kind and helpful in many ways: Martha Gardner, Timothy Hullquist,Earl Lavoie, Myke Leonard, Gary Lewis, John Dodge Miles, Anne Smallman, and the staff of our publisher, TEACH Services, Inc. Finally, we wrestled with questions of cost and accessibility, and we reached a compromise that we hope will satisfy all who desire to ownthe Album. If these images of a century and more ago recall memories of your favorite Franklin County places, we will feel well-rewarded for our work.
